Twenty-two families of Brusubi Tranquil estate are facing eviction from their homes after years of court fights with a German national, Bernd George Diedrich, who claims ownership of the land.

The dispute flared up again when bailiffs from the Banjul High Court went to the estate to evict the homeowners.

The residents refused to leave their properties saying they have spent millions of dalasis building their homes and that they wouldn’t give up their lands to anyone.

Speaking at a news conference, Sulayman Badjie, spokesman for the residents, called on the government to intervene.
“This situation is frustrating and could eventually lead to serious conflict.

“The possible consequence of this may lead to violence or undesirable result since they are constant coming to our homes to evict us forcefully,” he said.

Mr Badjie accused Mr Bernd of trying to sell “our homes when the matter was not fully resolved.

“We had residential land usage while Bernd was granted agricultural lease.”
