The Arab Development Fund (ADF) has approved a $20.4m loan to the Gambia government for its electricity expansion project.

The Gambia’s Electricity System Rehabilitation and Expansion Project (GESREP) is expected to contribute to the government’s goal of increasing electricity access through the provision of reliable electricity and strengthening of the institutional systems of Nawec.

The project objectives include providing consumers with reliable low-carbon electricity, increasing Nawec’s billing and revenue collection capacity.

It also includes supporting institutional strengthening and ensuring effective operations as well as maintenance of electrical facilities.

The Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs said the ADF is making available to the government a total amount of AED15 million, which is equivalent to $20.4 million divided into an ADF grant of AED10 million and a TSF Pillar grant of AED5 million for the implementation of the project.
