The new Auditor General, Cherno Amadou Sowe, has announced a key milestone in the country’s financial accountability drive with the submission of the 2023 Audit Report and Management Letter of the Government of The Gambia’s financial statements.
Mr. Sowe confirmed that the documents were officially delivered to the Minister of Finance and the National Assembly, describing the move as a decisive step in tackling years of delayed audits.
“This achievement reflects the dedication of all stakeholders, including my hardworking staff, whose collective efforts have significantly reduced the audit backlog of the Government’s accounts,” Mr. Sowe said.
The Auditor General revealed that the audit reports for 2021, 2022, and 2023 are scheduled to be laid before the National Assembly by the Minister of Finance today, Monday, September 29, 2025.
He expressed optimism that presenting the three reports together will help the legislature scrutinise public finances more effectively and strengthen oversight on government spending.
Mr. Sowe, who recently took over the nation’s top audit office, stressed that clearing the backlog is crucial to restoring public trust and ensuring timely reporting on how taxpayers’ money is used.
He assured Gambians that his office remains committed to transparency, accuracy, and accountability in financial management.
