Gambian President Adama Barrow has condemned the military coup in Niger and described coups as threatening of peace both nationally and regionally.

Barrow made the remarks as he joined ECOWAS head of states in Nigeria at an Extra-Ordinary Session.

The Regional bloc has condemned the coup in Niger and asked the soldiers to return power and go back to their barracks within seven days as the bloc opts for financial sanction.

“The recent trend of military takeovers in the ECOWAS region, threatening national and regional peace, stability and development,” he said.

Barrow called on the regional organization to work on their earlier recommendations for a stand by force, and enhance dialogue through diplomacy and good neighbourliness for the states and their peoples.
