The Gambia Farmers Union has commended the government for its continued support to farmers, while calling for the swift completion of outstanding payments from the last groundnut trade season.

In a statement, the union said agriculture remains a critical pillar of The Gambia’s economy, sustaining livelihoods, creating employment and contributing significantly to national food security.

The union praised the government for the early distribution of fertiliser and other farming inputs, noting that the intervention has helped farmers prepare adequately for the current season and improve production prospects.

It also acknowledged the role of the National Food Security Processing and Marketing Corporation and other partners for their continued support to farmers, particularly in production and marketing.

The statement noted that payments for the previous trade season have already been initiated through the Gambia Groundnut Corporation, with many farmers receiving their dues.

However, the union expressed concern that payments have not yet been fully completed in some areas, leaving a number of farmers still waiting.

“The Gambia Farmers Union therefore urges all concerned sectors to immediately complete the remaining payments to ensure that every farmer receives their full entitlement,” the statement said.

It added that timely payments are essential in enabling farmers to meet their financial needs and adequately prepare for the next farming season.

The union reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the government, institutions and development partners to advance agricultural development, improve farmer welfare and strengthen food security across the country.
