A thrilling football showdown between Tambasansang and Layout in Basse descended into violence, leaving multiple fans injured and sparking outrage among residents.
The much-anticipated match, which drew hundreds of supporters, was tense from kickoff as both sides fought hard for victory.
But celebrations quickly turned sour when tempers flared after the final whistle, triggering a violent confrontation between rival fans.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as furious supporters from both teams hurled stones and used sticks to attack each other.
Screams filled the air as people scrambled for safety while the pitch turned into a battleground.
Several spectators sustained injuries, though the exact number remains unclear.
Property was also damaged during the clash. One man’s vehicle had its windscreen smashed after it was pelted with stones.
“They broke the screen of my friend’s car,” Abdoulie Daffeh told Gambiana, condemning the actions as “hooliganism which has no room in modern day football.”
The violent scenes have drawn concern from community members, who fear such incidents could tarnish the spirit of local sports.
The matter has been reported to the Basse Football Committee, which is expected to launch an investigation into the incident.
Local authorities have yet to issue a statement, but many in the community are urging swift action to hold the perpetrators accountable and restore calm to Basse’s football scene.
