James Bass is not just another college basketball player, he’s a trailblazer.
The Gambian-born athlete, now starring at UT Martin, has turned childhood dreams into reality, and he’s carrying the hopes of a nation on his broad shoulders.
“Growing up in Gambia and Senegal, life was simple but full of community,” Bass recalls.
“We spent our days outside, playing soccer, running around, just enjoying being kids. Basketball wasn’t the focus yet, but the discipline and resilience I learned then carried over when I picked up the game.”
It was watching NBA stars like LeBron James that first lit the spark.
“At first, it was just for fun. But when coaches started recognizing my talent, I realized basketball could shape my future,” he says.
The transition to the U.S. was anything but easy.

“Everything moved fast, school, sports, social life. Adapting to new food, slang, and culture pushed me out of my comfort zone,” Bass admits.
“But basketball connected me instantly. It was my bridge to people, my way to belong.”
Campbell Hall proved transformative. “It taught me to balance academics with basketball, and I learned leadership, responsibility, and how to thrive under pressure,” he says.
Competing on the Nike EYBL circuit was a defining moment.
“Every game was a battle against the best,” he says. “I learned that effort and consistency matter just as much as talent.”
Committing to UT Martin was a dream fulfilled.

“Being one of the first Gambian-born players in the Ohio Valley Conference is huge,” Bass says.
“I want to represent my country and inspire kids back home that their dreams are possible.”
Looking ahead, Bass has bigger goals: “I want to grow as a leader, help UT Martin compete for championships, and one day play professionally. My journey is just beginning, but every step is for Gambia.”
On giving advice to young Gambian athletes chasing dreams abroad, he says: “Work harder than you think you need to, stay humble, and never forget where you came from. Doors will open if you stay disciplined and focused.”
