The Gambian government risks losing a landmark agreement that allows its citizens to work on farms in Spain after more than 30 workers reportedly absconded in Spain.

The bilateral scheme, which was initially met with mixed reactions at home, has been thrown into uncertainty as a number of participants from the first batch failed to return at the end of their contracts.

Spanish authorities have warned that the programme could be scrapped permanently if the issue is not addressed.

In response, the Gambian government has urged the absconded workers to return, saying their actions threaten future opportunities for others.

The Ministry of Trade, which negotiated the agreement, has intensified calls for compliance.

Former Trade Minister Baboucarr Ousmaila Joof, who now serves as Defence Minister, warned the deal “is currently threatened,” adding that failure with Spain could jeopardise similar offers from Poland and other European countries.

“Those whose children are in Spain and decide not to return should understand that we are risking and spoiling a great opportunity for several families in this country,” he said.
