The Government of The Gambia has confirmed the arrest of Sanna Manjang, a former member of the Junglers implicated in serious human rights abuses during the regime of ex-president Yahya Jammeh.
Manjang was apprehended in the early hours of Saturday in the Casamance region of southern Senegal, following a joint security operation between Gambian and Senegalese authorities. He has been on the run since January 2017.
According to the government, the operation was the result of months of cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
Manjang was named in the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) findings as a key figure behind torture, enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings during the Jammeh era.
The government described his arrest as a major step towards justice and accountability for victims of past abuses.

Arrangements are now being made for his repatriation to The Gambia, where he will be processed according to the law.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to uphold justice, protect human rights and maintain peace and security in the country.
It also expressed gratitude to the Government of Senegal for its continued support and cooperation.
