The Gambia has granted temporary refuge to Cameroonian opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary, citing concerns for his safety following recent political tensions in Cameroon.

Bakary arrived in The Gambia on 7 November 2025, the Gambian government confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday.

According to the statement, his presence in The Gambia is in line with the country’s commitment to regional peace and diplomacy.

The government also stressed that The Gambia “will not be used for any subversive activities against another state,” affirming its stance on non-interference.

The government said it is working with regional partners, including Nigeria, to encourage a peaceful and negotiated resolution while safeguarding stability.

Tchiroma was the main challenger to Cameroon’s 92-year-old President Paul Biya in last month’s presidential election — a poll widely criticised for alleged vote-rigging, violence and intimidation.

A former ally of Biya, Tchiroma claimed he won the election, but official results declared Biya the winner, extending his 43-year rule.

Opposition groups accused Biya’s administration of suppressing dissent and manipulating electoral processes to maintain power.

Following the announcement of the election results, Tchiroma’s supporters clashed with police in several cities.

Tchiroma told journalists that he had been receiving threats but vowed to remain steadfast in his political struggle.
