The Gambia Navy has intercepted a canoe carrying 180 migrants believed to be heading to Spain in an attempt to reach Europe by sea.
The interception happened in the early hours of Saturday, 9 November 2025, during routine naval patrols in Gambian territorial waters.
According to officials, the group included 163 Gambians, 15 Senegalese and two Guinean nationals from Conakry.
Naval authorities say the migrants were travelling in dangerous conditions and were stopped before leaving Gambian waters.
The incident comes amid growing concerns about irregular migration and the risks faced by young Africans attempting the perilous journey to Europe.
The migrants have been handed over to the relevant authorities for further processing.
