The Gambia is gearing up for a big moment on the global stage as it prepares to host the 12th Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary Conference, a major event bringing together First Ladies from across the continent to tackle health and social challenges.
The two-day conference, taking place from October 14 to 15 at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre, will be under the patronage of First Lady Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow.
She will host her counterparts from São Tomé and Príncipe, Liberia, Senegal, Burundi, the Central African Republic, and Nigeria.

Madam Bah-Barrow has already begun welcoming her guests, receiving the First Ladies of São Tomé and Príncipe and Liberia at Banjul International Airport on Saturday evening.
The summit will focus on improving access to healthcare and empowering women across Africa.
Officials said the event reflects the government’s drive to strengthen healthcare systems, boost women’s participation in development, and position The Gambia as a growing hub for regional cooperation.
