
The Gambia is in mourning following the passing of Modou Gamo, the nation’s celebrated Para powerlifter aged 40.
Born in 1986, Gamo represented The Gambia as the sole Para athlete at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, competing in the 100+kg category.
His performance earned him a certificate of merit from the Commonwealth Games Federation.
“Indeed we belong to Allāh, and indeed to Him we will return.” Prayers have been offered for his forgiveness, the elevation of his rank among the guided, and for comfort to his family and loved ones.
The Gambia National Paralympic Committee (GNPC) described Gamo’s death as an irreparable loss to the sporting community.
Tributes have come from athletes, coaches, and sports enthusiasts, praising his dedication, achievements, and role in raising the profile of Para sports in The Gambia.
Gamo’s legacy extends beyond competition; he inspired future generations of athletes and brought international recognition to Gambian Para powerlifting.
The sporting fraternity joins his family in grief while celebrating a life marked by resilience and achievement.
The GNPC has expressed profound condolences to his family and all who worked alongside him in developing Para sports in the country.
