The Ministry of Lands, Regional Government and Religious Affairs has suspended the Alkalolu of Batokunku and Tanji following allegations of illegal land sales in government-designated layouts.

In a press release issued on October 8, the Ministry expressed “deep concern” over reports of unauthorised transactions involving public lands in the West Coast Region.

According to the statement, the two Alkalolu were previously warned about their involvement in similar activities but allegedly continued the illegal sales.

“The Hon. Minister has with immediate effect suspended the Alkalolu of Batokunku and Tanji respectively, pending the outcome of investigations,” the Ministry said, adding that acting Alkalolu will soon be appointed for both communities.

A special taskforce has been constituted to investigate the matter and ensure that public lands are protected from illegal transactions.

Preliminary findings suggest that parcels of land held in trust for public use were sold without prior approval from the Ministry.

“These actions, if confirmed, are in direct violation of existing land governance laws,” the statement warned.

The Ministry cautioned the public to refrain from engaging in any land transactions with the suspended Alkalolu and reminded citizens that selling government land is strictly prohibited.

“Any individual found engaging in illegal land transactions will face the full force of the law,” it said.

Officials and staff of the Ministry who may have aided the alleged sales were also warned that they would face disciplinary action if found complicit.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public lands, promoting transparency in land administration, and respecting the roles of traditional leaders within the confines of the law.
