Four government agencies have confirmed an oil spill around the GamPetroleum fuel storage facility in Mandinaring, Kombo North, following a discharge operation involving the vessel m/t “DORRY” on 19 November 2025.

The National Environment Agency (NEA), Gambia Maritime Administration (GMA), National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) said the spill occurred during the offloading of Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) into the facility’s pipeline system.

The discharge was immediately suspended after vessel crew observed oil in the water. GamPetroleum later confirmed that a fault in the pipeline system was identified and repaired.

A multi-agency response was activated at around 8:45 a.m., with officials confirming that the oil had travelled beyond the pipeline zone and affected parts of the Banjul shoreline, including areas near Albert Market, the ferry terminal, State House, and the former Radio SYD site.

Authorities have demanded full incident reports, operational logs, and compliance documentation from GamPetroleum.

Clean-up efforts have begun, with agencies working together to contain environmental damage, protect public health, and secure affected coastal areas.

The clean-up is expected to commence fully by Tuesday, 25 November.

The agencies said a full investigation will be launched to determine the root cause, hold those responsible accountable, and strengthen safety measures in the petroleum sector.

They also promised transparent updates to the public as more information becomes available.
