Presidential adviser Henry Gomez has launched a stinging attack on United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Ousainou Darboe, questioning his suitability for the presidency and claiming his leadership would be largely symbolic if elected.

Speaking at a Gambia Moral Congress (GMC) gathering, Gomez argued that Darboe’s age would hinder his ability to govern effectively, insisting the country requires more active leadership.

“Ousainou Darboe wants us to give the country, and he is 90 years old,” Gomez said.
“When he is given this country, he will turn State House into a hospital and turn his office into a pharmacy. He is going to be a ceremonial president.”

Gomez maintained that leadership of The Gambia should not be reduced to symbolism, warning that the nation’s challenges demand full-time executive capacity.

His comments form part of a growing wave of heated political rhetoric ahead of the 5 December presidential election, as ruling camp figures and opposition leaders intensify exchanges over governance and leadership credibility.

The UDP is yet to respond to the remarks.
