Amie Bensouda, former lead counsel of the Janneh Commission, appeared before a parliamentary committee investigating the commission’s work on the financial dealings of former president Yahya Jammeh and his associates.

Her testimony was briefly interrupted by technical glitches, forcing the committee to take a break.

During her appearance, Ms Bensouda clarified that she had not made a formal statement but had participated in interviews with investigators.

When asked if she could review a prepared statement, she said: “I would have to advise myself whether I would accept it made by myself,” adding that she would need context to properly review any transcript.

She also noted that if no transcript was available, she would need to listen to the audio recording to verify the content.

The committee granted her time to go through the documents, pausing proceedings and planning to resume after lunch at 3pm.

Ms Bensouda’s careful approach highlighted her insistence that any statement attributed to her must accurately reflect her own words.
