Large numbers of Ahlu Sunnah followers gathered in Banjul to show solidarity with Imam Abdul Kareem Kuyateh, whose sermon remarks against the Magal Touba pilgrimage sparked controversy and outrage among the Mouride community.
The young cleric has come under fierce criticism in both The Gambia and Senegal after claiming in one of his widely shared sermons that Magal Touba is un-Islamic and goes against the teachings of Islam.

The Gambian government, through the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Supreme Islamic Council, has condemned his remarks and apologised to the Mouride community.
Officials stressed that the state would not tolerate comments that could endanger the country’s peace and stability.

Police summoned Imam Kuyateh on Monday to their headquarters in Banjul for possible mediation with Mouride representatives.
However, the move has been met with strong support from Ahlu Sunnah followers, who said they adhere to the doctrine of following the Prophet’s footsteps.
Large numbers of them turned up in the capital to defend the imam, chanting “Allahu Akbar”, meaning “God is Great”, and insisting they were defending Islam.
Supporters said their presence demonstrated their commitment to religious freedom and solidarity with Imam Kuyateh, amid tensions over his comments.
