National Assembly of Gambia

The National Assembly has doubled the fee for registering political parties, raising it from D1 million to D2 million.

The controversial move passed with 12 votes in favor and 5 against, igniting a heated debate in parliament.

The increase was recommended by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and backed by the ruling NPP.

Nianija NAM Amadou Camara said it was needed to stop “hundreds of parties” from flooding politics. Bakary Kora of Upper Fulladu even suggested it should be D4 million.

Majority Leader Billay G. Tunkara and Kebba Lang Fofana, a nominated member, also supported the hike, with Fofana arguing parties “should not be treated like small businesses.”

Opposition voices warned the rise could shut out ordinary citizens. Foni Bintang NAM Bakary Badjie, eyeing the 2026 presidential race, wants the fee kept at D1 million.

Lamin J. Sanneh of Brikama South said it could block citizens’ right to form parties, while Serekunda NAM Musa Cham accused the Assembly of favouring the wealthy.

Justice Minister Dawda Jallow stayed neutral, saying the decision is up to lawmakers but added that stronger enforcement of existing rules could curb weak political groups.
