A Gambian-British lawyer Lamin J. Darboe has said he is willing to renounce his British citizenship if elected president of The Gambia.

He is, one of eleven candidates vying to lead the United Democratic Party (UDP) into the 2026 election, made the commitment after a marathon vetting interview on Friday.

Speaking about his dual nationality, he said he would only give up his British citizenship to contest the presidency.

He recalled turning down a ministerial post in 2017, citing the Gambian Constitution, which bars dual nationals from holding such positions.

“I am willing to renounce my dual nationality for the position of president alone, not for a ministerial role,” he said.

He also criticised the UDP’s handling of his previous application in 2021. “I applied in 2021 but I was not called for an interview, and that was unfair,” he added.

Darboe, widely regarded as highly competent, brings a rich CV to the contest.
