Mayor of Banjul, Rohey Malick Lowe, has paid a moving tribute to Alhaji Momodou Cham, widely known as Alhaji MC Cham, describing him as a pillar of strength, wisdom and democratic leadership.

Alhaji MC Cham passed away peacefully at his residence in Banjul on Friday.

Mayor Lowe said his passing marks not only a personal loss for the family but also the end of a historic chapter in The Gambia’s political journey.

She hailed him as a seasoned politician, a founding architect of Gambian democracy and a key figure in shaping the political consciousness of a generation.

“To the nation, he was MC Cham. To me, he was my darling Grandpa — a mentor, a guide and a constant source of support,” she wrote.

Mayor Lowe said the late Cham embodied calm, principled leadership rooted in patience, composure and silent strength.

She recalled his resilience and unwavering support during difficult political moments, especially when party leaders faced arrest.

“He stood firm, offering courage and clarity. He showed us what true leadership meant,” she noted.

She described him as one of the key figures who helped build and nurture the United Democratic Party (UDP) into a formidable political force and a symbol of democratic hope.

Mayor Lowe prayed for Allah’s mercy upon his soul and extended condolences to his family, UDP leader Ousainu Darboe and the entire nation.

“Rest in perfect peace, my dear husband. Your work here was done with honour, dignity and love for your country,” she concluded.
