Police have charged a shopkeeper with murder following the death of a Tanji  businesswoman.

The suspect, who is believed to be from Guinea Conakry, was charged this evening after a violent protest by residents of Tanji.

Officers were called to the outskirts of Tanji today after the body of a woman was discovered.

The unnamed woman, who was known to the suspect, went missing on Sunday after visiting the shopkeeper to collect cash she has deposited with him.

Police said the shopkeeper was trying to flee the country with the woman’s money after selling his shop.

He managed to convince the woman, a fish seller, to meet up on Sunday to collect her money. That was the last time she was seen alive.

Police spokesman Lamin Njie said: “the shopkeeper is the suspect and he has been arrested and he is currently helping the police in their investigation.

“In fact, as we speak the police have charged him with murder because we have sufficient evidence to connect him with murder of the deceased woman.”
