Police in Soma have launched an investigation into a tragic road traffic fire incident that claimed the lives of four people in the Lower River Region.
The incident occurred on Saturday between Karantaba and Jabisa Village following a collision between a seven-seater vehicle and a motorcycle reportedly carrying fuel.
Upon impact, a fire broke out instantly, engulfing both vehicles.
Police first responders from Soma Hybrid Police Station arrived at the scene after receiving a distress call, while the Gambia Fire and Rescue Services were also deployed to contain the blaze.
Three occupants of the seven-seater vehicle and the motorcyclist were trapped in the fire and burnt to death.
The remains of the deceased were evacuated to Soma District Hospital, but due to the severity of the burns, the victims could not be immediately identified.
Medical authorities have recommended that the remains be transferred to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) mortuary for further handling.
The Gambia Police Force has expressed condolences to the affected families and urged road users to exercise extreme caution, particularly when travelling near or transporting flammable substances.
Investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided.
