Raffia Diab has accused the United Democratic Party (UDP) of betraying Talib Bensouda, weighing in on the young politician’s exit and his decision to start his own political movement.

The senior Citizens Alliance official said he had been informed by a UDP insider that party leader Ousainou Darboe had previously promised not to contest the leadership, intending instead for Talib to succeed him.

“For me, I believe Talib was betrayed and used. Talib has a base, and the party benefited from it,” Mr Diab said, suggesting that the party took advantage of Talib’s popularity for its own gain.

Despite his criticism, Mr Diab acknowledged the role UDP played in Talib’s rise. He said while the party supported the young politician, Talib himself made significant contributions that cannot be overlooked.

“He has done a lot for the party in terms of administration, logistics, and fundraising,” Mr Diab added, highlighting the efforts Talib invested while serving the party.

The senior official also hinted that Talib’s move to form his own political movement was a response to what he perceives as unfair treatment and political manipulation within the UDP.

Observers note that Talib’s departure could reshape the opposition landscape, particularly as young leaders seek to assert themselves in Gambian politics.
