Spain’s Ambassador to The Gambia, Dolores Ríos Peset, has reaffirmed her country’s commitment to working closely with The Gambia on key areas of national development.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark Spain’s National Day on Sunday at the Ebujeng Theatre in Kanifing, Ambassador Peset praised the longstanding friendship between the two countries, highlighting cooperation in governance, education, and migration.

She particularly referenced the Spain–Gambia circular migration initiative, describing it as an important framework for legal mobility and job creation for Gambian youths.

While the programme recently faced setbacks due to reports that some Gambian workers did not return after completing their contracts, Spain continues to engage constructively with Gambian authorities to strengthen the agreement and ensure its long-term success.

Ambassador Ríos Peset also commended the Spanish community in The Gambia for fostering cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the two nations.
Spain’s National Day, Fiesta Nacional de España, is observed annually on 12 October.

The occasion marks Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas in 1492, an event symbolising Spain’s emergence as a global power and its shared heritage across the Hispanic world.

Ambassador Ríos Peset described the day as one of pride and reflection for Spanish citizens worldwide.
