Tension is escalating in Jambur Sinjang Keita following a land dispute after a man allegedly claimed ownership of a large portion of the community, affecting more than 500 homes.

Residents say the situation has created fear and uncertainty among families who have lived in the area for many years.

They accuse Lamin Sonko Sarr, whom they identified as a resident of Bakau, of coming to the community with police officers in an attempt to evict them from their homes.

At least eight residents are reportedly being held at the Brikama Police Station following the confrontation between the two sides.

Community members said their elders have since gone to the police station to engage authorities and seek the release of those detained.

Speaking to reporters, one resident, Mamadou Jallow, said many families have been settled in the community for more than two decades and would resist any attempt to remove them.

“Some of us have been living here for more than twenty years,” Jallow said.

“But over our dead bodies would we accept to leave this place,” he added.

Residents questioned the ownership claim over the land, saying they have built their homes and established their lives in the community over the years.

They accused Sonko Sarr of using police presence to intimidate residents and force them out of their homes.

“They have arrested some of our boys who are held at Brikama Police Station. But our community elders have gone there,” Jallow said.

The dispute has raised concerns among residents, who are calling on authorities to intervene and ensure that the matter is resolved through legal and peaceful means.

Some community members said they want the relevant institutions to investigate the ownership documents presented by both sides before any action is taken.

The residents have appealed for calm while urging authorities to protect the rights of people living in the community.

The details surrounding the land ownership claim, including the legal status of the disputed parcel and the basis for the reported eviction attempt, remain unclear.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
