Fabakary B Ceesay, owner of Trumpet online newspaper, has been released on bail after spending a night in police detention in Banjul.

Mr Ceesay was picked up on Monday (12 December) sparking calls among Gambian journalists for his release.

Police spokeswoman Cadet ASP Binta Njie told Gambiana that the journalist “is bailed and will be reporting to the police”.

According to police, they have received a report against the suspect indicating his “alleged involvement in making several attempts of obtaining monetary and other benefits from companies and threatening to expose classified information associated with the said companies if they fail to fulfill his demands”.

Mr Ceesay has been contacted for comment.
