A new large-capacity ferry from Turkish company Negmar is set to reduce congestion and waiting times on the Banjul-Barra river crossing.
The vessel, Selimiye, can carry up to 1,000 passengers and 80 vehicles, including 30 trucks.
Officials said it is expected to significantly improve daily commuting and transport logistics between the two towns.

For many, this could mean the end of hours-long queues and frustrating delays.
Hali Gai, who is part of the ferry management team, told Gambiana: “The ferry will start operations in October. It will tackle the challenges commuters face daily.”

The ferry was recently unveiled to the press in Banjul. Sleek, spacious, and modern, Selimiye promises comfort and efficiency, from quick boarding to safe crossings. It’s clear the new vessel is a game-changer.
A trial run for the Banjul-Barra ferry line is expected before the end of 2025. For the thousands who rely on the river daily, it’s good news.

Less waiting, smoother rides, and a more reliable service are finally on the horizon.
Negmar is confident the ferry will revolutionise travel on this route.

Mr Gai added: “Selimiye will transform the experience for both Gambians and visitors, making the crossing quicker and more comfortable.”
The Gambian government has welcomed the development, noting that better transport links are vital for trade, tourism, and economic growth.
