The U.S. Embassy in Banjul has reminded Gambians that the United States visa bond policy, which took effect on October 11, applies to all B1/B2 visa applicants.

Under the policy, eligible travellers must post a refundable bond of up to 15,000 dollars, with the exact amount decided during their visa interview.

While some countries are charged 5,000 or 10,000 dollars, The Gambia is placed in the highest bond category.

According to the embassy, applicants should make the payment only through the official U.S. government online system after being instructed by a consular officer.

Travellers entering under this policy must use designated airports in Boston, New York (JFK), or Washington Dulles.

The embassy stated that the bond will be refunded if all visa terms are respected, but will be forfeited if the traveller overstays.

The U.S. government said the visa bond policy is based on its assessment of countries with high visa overstay rates.

Many Gambians have expressed concern that the requirement poses a heavy financial burden on ordinary visitors.
