Seedy Njie

Karats Sonko, campaign manager of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has dismissed recent accusations by Deputy Speaker Seedy Njie as “baseless and dangerous,” accusing him of spreading lies and fuelling tribal divisions.

Njie, a senior member of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), alleged earlier this week that the UDP deployed armed militias during the last presidential election to prevent non-Mandinkas from obtaining voter cards — a claim that sparked outrage among opposition supporters.

Responding at a UDP rally, Sonko lashed out at Njie, describing him as a serial liar and a promoter of tribal politics.

“I have never seen anyone who lies like Seedy Njie. He falsely accused the UDP of deploying militias to block non-Mandinkas. He is known for using tribalism to divide Gambians,” Sonko said.

He also referenced Njie’s controversial role during the 2016 political crisis, accusing him of backing former President Yahya Jammeh’s refusal to step down after losing the election.

“Seedy Njie should be the last person to speak in this country. His support for Jammeh’s illegal state of emergency in 2016 forced thousands of Gambians to flee to Senegal,” Sonko added.

He warned that Njie’s rhetoric was dangerous and undermined national unity, urging Gambians to reject attempts to revive ethnic divisions for political gain.
