
A US-born Gambian man who was fatally shot in Atlanta last week has been laid to rest in the city.
Abdul Basit Hydara, 31, was gunned down in the US state of Georgia, sending shockwaves through the local Gambian community.
His death has sparked calls for justice and renewed appeals to tackle rising gun violence.
The late Hydara is remembered as a devoted Muslim and a very respectful young man in his community.
Police have opened an investigation into his killing, and efforts are underway to apprehend his killers.
Under a steady rainfall, dozens of Gambians in Atlanta attended his burial and condolence service.
Baye Secka, Imam Ratib of the Gambian community, who led the funeral prayers, remembered the late Hydara as a devoted Muslim who was hardworking and peaceful in his community.
He prayed for Allah to forgive him his shortcomings and grant him paradise.
Community elder, Sheikh Abdalla Darboe, also remembered the deceased as pious and devoted to his religion.
He called for action to end gun violence.
“We should all come together to address such violence. We need to caution our kids. This young man contributed a lot of good things to his community, and he was always peaceful,” he said.
