A three-day regional conference on information integrity has opened in the Cape Verdean capital, Praia, bringing together ministers, regulators, and media professionals from across West Africa and the Sahel.

The forum, organised by UNESCO in partnership with the Cape Verdean government, is designed to promote a coordinated approach to digital governance while safeguarding human rights and strengthening resilience against disinformation and hate speech.

Gambia’s Minister of Information, Dr Ismaila Ceesay, was among the keynote speakers.

He hailed the opportunities offered by rapid digital transformation for democratic participation and access to knowledge, but also warned of its risks.

“Yet, it has also exposed our region to serious threats including disinformation, misinformation, hate speech, and the manipulation of narratives that undermine democratic governance, fuel division, and put vulnerable groups, especially women and youth, at risk,” Dr Ceesay told delegates.

The Praia conference has drawn information ministers, information commissioners, regulators, and communication experts from across the region.

It is expected to conclude with the adoption of a model policy on information integrity, a governance framework for digital platforms, and a regional plan of action.
