Latrikunda Sabiji lawmaker Yaya Menteng Sanyang has resigned from the United Democratic Party (UDP), citing “irreconcilable differences” with the party over its choice of flagbearer ahead of the 2026 presidential elections.

In a letter dated October 5, 2025, and addressed to UDP senior administrative secretary Alagie S. Darboe, Sanyang said the decision was made after “extensive and painful consultations” with his family and advisers.

“This decision has been the most agonizing of my political career,” he wrote. “I am consumed by a deep, gnawing sense of grief. Leaving the UDP feels like leaving a part of my own family behind.”

Sanyang, who entered parliament under the UDP ticket, said his departure stemmed solely from the party’s choice of flagbearer,  a move he believes weakens the UDP’s electoral chances and fails to unite the country.

“My difference with the party is singular but irreconcilable. I do not believe the current flagbearer choice offers the best path to victory or unity,” he said.

Despite leaving the party, Sanyang pledged to support the UDP caucus in the National Assembly on policies that benefit the country.

“Where the caucus’s position promotes national development, my vote and voice will align,” he added.

The Latrikunda Sabiji MP, however, stressed that he harbors no resentment toward the UDP or its leadership.

“The UDP will forever remain dear to my heart,” he said, thanking the party for its mentorship and contribution to his political journey.

Sanyang’s resignation adds to a growing list of UDP figures quitting the party in recent weeks, amid internal rifts and a widening debate over the party’s future direction.
