Henry Gomez has come under heavy criticism on social media after suggesting that United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Ousainou Darboe would “turn State House into a hospital” if elected president because of his age.

He made the remarks during the Gambia Moral Congress (GMC) congress, where he questioned Darboe’s fitness to govern.

“Ousainou Darboe wants us to give him the country, and he is 90 years old. When he is given this country, he will turn State House into a hospital and turn his office into a pharmacy. He is going to be a ceremonial president,” Gomez said.

His comments quickly sparked a wave of reactions online, with many supporters of the veteran opposition leader condemning the remarks as disrespectful.

“Big Daddy, I want to know if you will look at Ba Ousainou in the face and say the exact same things you said in that gathering,” one Facebook user wrote.

The supporter added: “Old age comes with health issues sometimes, but we are seeing younger people dealing with health issues too. Besides, old age is wisdom.”

Another commenter dismissed Gomez’s speech, writing: “It’s clear that he didn’t have any agenda to tell the people.”

Others accused the presidential adviser of disrespecting an elder statesman.
“Respect is very important in humanity. It starts from home,” one user wrote.

Some supporters argued that the repeated attacks on Darboe could strengthen his political standing ahead of the December presidential election.

“Why are you people so concerned about Darboe? Your persistent talking about him is giving him more political strength,” another commenter said.

Others rallied behind the UDP leader, describing him as a politician who had sacrificed for The Gambia and deserved public support.
